Getting started video
Note: This video was recorded in Summer 2022. Some installation procedures have slightly changed, see instructions below for updated instructions for Windows and Apple machines.
Software installation instructions
Before you begin the course, you will need the latest version of R and RStudio on your local Windows or Mac machine. Both are totally free!
Begin by installing R on your computer:

- Go to https://cran.rstudio.com/
- If Windows:
- select “Download for Windows”
- select “base” then “Download R 4.3.1 For Windows” for Windows version 10 and later. If you do not know your Windows version select Start > Settings > System > About.
- if your Windows version is 8 or earlier, please contact me at qtswanquist@ua.edu.
- run the installer and follow the instructions for installation (leaving default settings is preferred)
- Else (you’ll get it later) Mac:
- select “Download for (Mac) OS”
- before downloading, check your operating system (OS) and processor by clicking the “apple” in the upper-left corner of your screen and select “About This Mac.”
- if your OS is 10 or earlier please try to upgrade your system. Otherwise contact me at qtswanquist@ua.edu.
- Take note of whether your machine has an Intel processor or not.
- select "R-4.3.1-x86_64.pkg" if you have an Intel processor and select "R-4.3.1-arm64.pkg" if you have a M1/M2 processor.
- run the installer and follow the instructions for installation (leaving default settings is preferred)
- You can find 'Rtools4.3' at: https://cran.r-project.org/bin/windows/Rtools/. Select Rtools43 installer.
- Run the installer and follow the instructions for installation (leaving default settings is preferred)
- Go to https://posit.co/download/rstudio-desktop/
- If Windows:
- select and download “Download RStudio Desktop for Windows”
- run the installer and follow the instructions for installation (leaving default settings is preferred)
- Else Mac:
- scroll down to "All Tarballs and Installers" and select the version for "macOS 11+"
- run the installer and follow the instructions for installation (leaving default settings is preferred)
